J. Walter Wood Jr. Residential Treatment Facility (JWWJ) is a 24-bed, state-owned program serving female youth ages 14 to 18 who are committed to the Alabama Department of Youth Services. Located in Montgomery, Alabama, JWWJ provides a safe, structured, and gender-responsive setting designed to meet the unique needs of young women requiring specialized residential treatment.
Our trauma-informed, strengths-based model is designed to support youth who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect. Each young woman receives a personalized treatment plan developed in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Professional, caring staff provide counseling, case management, and guidance through evidence-based programming focused on emotional wellness, positive skill development, behavior change, and personal accountability.
Students attend a year-round, on-site school in partnership with the Montgomery County Board of Education, with pathways to earn a high school diploma or GED. Career training includes certifications in CPR, First Aid, and other career and technical education (CTE) tracks. Additional program features include family engagement, service learning, and structured recreational activities that promote resilience and long-term success.
Through a youth-centered approach and proven therapeutic practices, JWWJ empowers young women with the tools to heal, grow, and thrive—during their stay and beyond.
